The FDE Role & Solution Architecture
Lecture Notes
## What is a Forward Deployed Engineer? Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs)—sometimes called Field Engineers or Solutions Architects—sit at the intersection of software engineering and customer success. You are the technical vanguard of the company. While traditional software engineers build the core platform, an FDE embeds directly with the client to implement, customize, and deploy that platform to solve the client's specific business problems. ### Core Responsibilities - **Discovery**: Leading technical scoping sessions with clients to understand their data silos and pain points. - **Prototyping**: Building rapid Proof of Concepts (PoCs) to demonstrate value within weeks, not months. - **Integration**: Writing custom scripts, data pipelines, and API integrations connecting the client's legacy systems to your modern platform. ### The Mindset An FDE must be aggressively pragmatic. You aren't writing code that needs to survive for 10 years; you are writing code that delivers multi-million dollar business value *today*.
